Why is it that traditional workplaces make some of us feel like a square peg in a round hole?
And often restricted in being the real us at work? We know that diverse voices and out of the box thinking make work better, richer and more exciting.
Finding Meaningful Work
Thrive in your work potential by doing things for a purpose. Work in what you can feel passionate about and can be invested in.
When it comes to work, society places pressure and expectations on us from an early age. Which exam choices are most important? What subjects and careers ‘should’ we follow? Often society enforces the “rational choice” of finding an office job with a stable salary - conformity.
Guidance like that works for some people, but everybody is unique; the world has evolved and the idea of being confined to a cubicle can be a dystopian nightmare for some. We often want more than a job. The BY@W belief is that work is an opportunity to make your unique difference and love what you do - work experience not requiring a fix or an off switch.
When society, parents, teachers, managers guide you towards the “sensible” decision, look inwards and decide what is right for you, and only you. If you are aware that you won’t be happy with their suggestions, it’s time to consider other options. We are the best versions of ourselves when we enjoy what we do, even if the hours are non-traditional, if it means working outside or if it means not taking the higher salary. You can only be the best version of yourself when you can find work that you find meaningful and that you enjoy.
If you are into visual arts, literature and music then follow your passion. If you find yourself constantly engaging with others or creating yourself, enjoy it. Meaningful work can come as a side hustle, while a parallel job brings financial independence to pursue a portfolio of work. Don't be afraid to mix it up.
Meaning at work comes from stimulated experiences. Choose work that makes you feel that you’d jump at the chance to do it. Embark on a creative endeavour within your work environment, perhaps as a positively disruptive spirit using your willingness to shake up the status quo.
Meaning feels excitable and energetic, share your fun and more excitable side; be comfortable in expressing who you are. Step into your imagination and seek out experiences at work that captivate you. Live in the now and spend your time doing something you enjoy, something of purpose.
It’s the creative thinkers, the people who think outside the box that revolutionise, innovate, and advance, and if you think this is your path, take it.
