        Many of us build our career from skills, we become subject matter experts and can feel stuck or flat when we stop being able to learn more and grow our knowledge. Add in a career break or a redundancy and we can find ourselves looking for a safe and secure option rather than seeking a more exciting future.

        When reviewing your career or in outplacement, break the cycle, exceed your own expectations and accelerate your career to the next level by being you. One way to do this is to reflect on your people skills and accelerate how you make a difference by doing it through others. Just because you may not have managed people before, or for a while, doesn’t mean that you won’t be great at it. The best leaders are good at getting the best out of others through encouraging people to believe in themselves. They build trusting relationships and create an environment where others are allowed to be authentically themselves without fear. Authenticity comes from being you in balance, bringing all of yourself to work and not hiding those parts you think are ‘not appropriate’. These traits are also naturally demonstrated in parenting, in caring situations and with friendships. In other words, we can all have a great career and elevate our enjoyment and impact by building our profile around being a great boss.

        So where do you start? Three great questions to ask yourself when reclaiming your career are.

        1. Who are you - your values?
        2. What do you know - not simply your CV but your unique and natural behaviours and skills?
        3. What do you want – aside from money, what kinds of environments, activities, relationships enthuse you?

        Take this moment to say goodbye to conformity and say hello to self-optimisation. Build your profile by championing your self-expression. When you stand out as a people person you drive a renewed sense of purpose in yourself. You start using your character to succeed as well as your skills and knowledge. Reframe your brand by being who you already are to move things forward by being you and aiming to bring out the best in others.

        Reflect on what makes you feel that you belong, what makes you feel included and excluded? What do you sense about people, use your empathy and intuition to read others more. See the best in others and let them own their conversations. Practice your verbal and written skills to place a greater emphasis on positive challenge to be and do more even better and build confidence in others when they can’t see it in themselves. These are traits you’ll often do naturally to support people that you care about in all aspects of your life. Do more of them.

        Being your positive and best self is infectious and your voice, being a great boss and building your profile inside and outside of your current or future organisation, will allow individuals to start succeeding because of - not in spite of - their individuality.  By amplifying your authentic and positive self you can impact not only your career but the future of working society.
